On October 16, 2023, Bettye Stallings Carvell, 84, of Grapeland, TX, passed away after a fight with pancreatic cancer and heart disease. Bettye was born on March 17, 1939, in Prairie County, Arkansas, to Malvin Euland Stallings and Quilly Mae (Eddins) Stallings. She met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Carvell, Jr., while at Brinkley Junior High, and they were high school sweethearts at Brinkley High School. They married on June 27, 1957, and moved to Dallas, Texas where Bob was attending college and working at Texas Instruments. After graduating from Sunset High School in Dallas, Bettye’s first job was at Mercantile Bank where she started out as a check processor. She met her life-long friend, Pat Allen, while working at Mercantile. She took some time off from banking to raise her three children, Cindy, Dena, and Bobby. She always encouraged them to acknowledge God’s presence in their lives, do their best, no matter the task, and to always work together. She accomplished this task with her daily examples of having fun while working hard and setting high expectations for her children.
In 1972, she went to work at Trinity National Bank where she was a teller and certificate of deposit representative. While working, she obtained her real estate broker’s license by taking course work in business, accounting, computer programs and real estate at Mountain View College. She worked as a broker in association with Alton Miller Realtors in Oak Cliff from 1976 to 1981. In 1982, she reestablished her banking career at Trinity National Bank as the assistant to the senior vice president and worked her way up to become the assistant vice president of consumer lending. There she originated consumer loans and serviced a $10 million commercial and consumer loan portfolio. From 1991 to 1994, Bettye worked for the Federal Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and Sunbelt Federal Savings where she helped develop and implement a system for maintaining, tracking, and sorting congressional inquiries, memoranda, and correspondence using multiple new computer programs. She was accomplished in consumer lending, managerial assistance, secretarial duties, loan servicing, payoff analysis, and loan compliance. She enjoyed working and made lifelong friends in her career.
When not working, Bettye enjoyed traveling back to Arkansas to visit family for holidays. She loved being in nature while camping with Bob and her children. She enjoyed painting and refinishing furniture and antiquing with friends. She was active at church and sang in the choir at Brooklyn Avenue United Methodist Church. Bettye believed her biggest and most important job was giving her children and grandchildren courage and strength and showing them God through her actions.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Malvin Euland Stallings, and Quilly Mae Eddins; siblings, Royal Dean Moffitt, and Ronald Elbert Stallings; and her husband of 60 years, Robert Carvell, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) and husband Thomas (Tom) Byrd; daughter, Dena Carvell and life partner Elaine Stiegler; son, Robert (Bob) M. Carvell and wife Lezlie Carvell; grandsons, Robert M. Carvell, Jr. and wife Devon, Luke Carvell, Justin Carvell and wife Krysta, and Zach King; great grandchildren, Tristian, Noah, Bronwyn, Alonie, Genesis, Haley Murphy and life partner, Christian Hoover, and Hunter Murphy; and great-great grandson, Benson Hoover.
