James McCullough

In the golden dawn of July 4, 1942, as the nation trembled under the weight of world war, a beacon of hope and promise graced the lives of Clifton and Elizabeth McCullough. They welcomed into the world their firstborn, a son, whom they named James Lincoln, destined to weave a tapestry of brilliance and grace.

From the tender age of innocence, James found solace and strength within the hallowed walls of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was baptized under the gentle guidance of Rev. W. D. Dowe. In the heart of Crockett, Texas, his spirit danced and his mind soared. James embraced his early years with fervor, crowned as an area spelling-bee champion, a victor of the state quiz contest, and a laureate of the New Farmers of America AG activities. His talents were manifold, a trumpet player whose melodies whispered the secrets of the soul, an athlete whose prowess inspired awe, and a scholar whose intellect shone as he ascended to the pinnacle of his class, Valedictorian of Ralph J. Bunche High School in 1961.

With a heart full of dreams, James journeyed to Prairie View A&M University, but soon, the call of duty resonated within him. In February 1962, he donned the uniform of the U.S. Army, serving as a sentinel of justice and peace in the turbulent lands of Vietnam. A sharpshooter with the M1 Carbine rifle, an expert with the .45 caliber pistol, he stood resolute, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the AFEM Commendation Medal. In February 1965, honorably discharged, he returned to Houston, Texas, where he nurtured his thirst for knowledge at Texas Southern University, garnering a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and later, a Master’s degree in Special Education from Sam Houston State University in the early 1970s.

Returning to Crockett, he became a pillar of strength for his elderly parents. He married Betty Dean, a union that, though childless, was rich in shared dreams and unwavering support. His professional journey saw him grace the halls of the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) as the Director of Special Education, where his wisdom and compassion touched countless lives. Rising to the role of Director of Operations at Crockett State School, he dedicated nearly three decades to molding young minds and nurturing broken spirits.

An entrepreneur at heart, James founded McCullough’s Tax Services, a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve. In time, love blossomed anew, and he joined hands with Rosemary Washington, a devoted partner for 30 cherished years.

Even in retirement, James's spirit remained restless, ever yearning to serve. As a resident of Crockett, he continued to lend his expertise as a tax consultant, a videographer, and a real estate investor. A stalwart in the community, his legacy was adorned with numerous accolades, each a testament to his dedication and love for his people. As President of the Crockett Colored High/Ralph J. Bunche alumni, he was a beacon of hope, instrumental in achieving the Exempt Purpose – Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) for the alumni organization.

On the serene morning of July 8, 2024, James Lincoln McCullough transcended to eternal rest. Preceded by his beloved parents, Clifton and Elizabeth McCullough, and his cherished siblings, Clyde McCullough, John Elliott McCullough, Detroit McCullough Sr., Elgin McCullough, Corrie Bell Hickman, Elizabeth Craig, and Marie Griffin, his departure left an indelible void.

Yet, his memory endures, a flame that refuses to dim. Left to cherish his legacy are his devoted wife, Rosemary McCullough; sisters, Shirley “Sue” (Elmer) Murray and Bobbie (Johnny) Sweet; son, Frederick Roberts; goddaughter, Karma (Anton) Brown; grandchildren, Trenston Hawkins, Frederick “Dude” Roberts, and Cherrick Archie; great-granddaughter, Noelle Archie; an extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a lifelong friend, Beauford Rhodes.

James Lincoln McCullough's life was a symphony of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication, a testament to the boundless possibilities of the human spirit. His journey will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to walk in his light

I remember when I met James at The Houston County Democrats Club years ago, and he told me a history lesson about The Civil War that needs to be in the history books.
