
Lizzie Mae Walker (80) was born the seventh of ten children on August 2, 1941 to Nathan Walker, Jr. and Annie Mary Moore Walker in Mt. Zion Community in Grapeland, TX. Lizzie Mae Walker’s parents instilled in Lizzie Mae values of tradition, education, respect, love for family, and faith in God. She also instilled these values in the generations to come.
As a child, Lizzie Mae worked on her parents’ land, attended church and school, and sang with her sisters. She graduated from W.R. Banks High School where she participated in school activities by playing basketball and singing in the choir.
Lizzie Mae moved to Houston in 1961, later choosing to study at Erma Hughes Business School before uniting in holy matrimony to Norvelle Leonard on May 11,1961. To this union 5 children were born, three preceded her in death, two as infants and one as an adult. Lizzie Mae and Norvell united with Christian Home Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Mitchell Moore.
Lizzie Mae carried herself with the utmost dignity, class, and charm in everything she did. Lizzie Mae worked in the River Oaks home of the Murphy family as a housekeeper during the 1970s. Lizzie Mae then focused on being a full-time stay-at-home wife, mother, and homemaker as she prized her family the most. Throughout all of this time Lizzie Mae also took pride in caring for many of her siblings’ and friends’ children as if they were her own. Lizzie Mae valued showing love and affection through acts of service, such as, cooking, cleaning, hairstyling, kind words, and advice.
At Christian Home Missionary Baptist Church as she enjoyed reciting speeches and participating in plays for church programs. She loved to share her energetic spirit and wisdom with conversation and smiles to family, friends, and acquaintances alike.
On April 6, 2022 Lizzie Mae Leonard departed this life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan Walker, Jr. and Annie Mary Moore Walker. Daughter, Gail Denise Holley; infant daughter, Valerie; infant son, Warren; siblings, Levora Moore, Eileen Wilmore, Wadester Tryon, Nathaniel Walker, and great-granddaughter, Mia Leonard.
Left to cherish her memories is her husband of 60 years, Norvelle, Sr.; son, Norvelle, Jr., daughter, Francine Shepherd (Kelvin), and son-in-law, Trent Holley. Siblings, Natharel Turner (Marvin), Theresa Curtis, Willie Walker (Elizabeth), Jimmie Walker (Mary), Claretta Eni (Joseph), Marva Hadnot. 5 grandchildren, Norvelle Leonard III, Kamaria Shepherd, Trent Holley, Jr., Clifton Holley, and Shanelle Leonard. 9 great-grandchildren. Sister-in-laws— Kattie Hatcher, Ida Oliver (Charles), Shirley Leonard, Hazel Holman (Ponell), Ruby Nickson (Eddie). Sister-in-law Willie E. Leonard, and brother-in-law Larry D. Leonard (Johnie) and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
