October 6, 1947, our beloved Maxine Tillis was born to parents Johnnie Lee Tills and Velma (Jackson) of Grapeland, Texas. Being raised in a loving and Christian home she accepted Christ at an early age. Maxine was a faithful member of Rising Star Baptist Church until her health began to decline. She was employed for many years with Grapeland Elementary and also provided home health. Her daughter Zelda Lewis provided relentless at home healthcare, love, and support for more than twenty-seven years. Mother, daughter, sister, cousin, and friend Maxine was generous and loved the Lord.
Maxine transitioned to her new life on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at her home as she had requested before death. Preceding her are her parents; uncle, Jimbo Jackson; three brothers, Johnnie G., Henry Lee and Eddie B. Tillis; and sister, Fannie Mae Brown.
Maxine’s passion for life and gifts of unconditional love can long be celebrated by those very fond and loving memories, including special son Frank, Tillis of Grapeland, TX; daughters Zelda (Chubby) Lewis, Rosie (Bruce) Tillis, of Grapeland, TX, Donna Close, Janice Close, Sara Warren, and Tonya Close, of Lufkin, TX, Carrie Bell Close, Lestine Close, of Crockett, TX, and Lottie B. Close, of Nacogdoches, TX; brothers L..J. Tillis, Houston, TX, Willie D. (Christine) Tillis Crockett, TX, James L. (Yolanda) Tillis and Walter L. Tillis of Grapeland, TX; sisters Mae Joyce Tillis Williams, Houston, TX, and Gloretha Tillis ( Jerry) Lewis of Grapeland, TX; grandchildren, Darneisha McCardell, Donte Brown, and Quentin (Pucker) Tillis; great-grand Raynia McCardell, and special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
