Mona Bennett




Heaven gained the sweetest of angels as Mona Bennett entered the gates of Heaven December 5, 2022. There to welcome her was her husband of 35 years, Arvel Bennett, son Randy Bennett, parents Newton and Ava Jo Peevy Dickson, sister Hazel Dickson Foster, brothers Elvin B. “Sonny” Dickson, Pete and Brince Dickson, son-in-law DeWayne Tate, brothers-in-law Leo L. Gillespie, Jimmy Gammage, Truman Foster and sister-in-law Vernice Dickson.


She is survived by her beloved daughters Jolleen Tate of Grapeland, TX, Bonnie White and husband Greg of Shepherd, TX, and Jan Duhon and husband Malcom of Grapeland, TX. Sisters Fern Gillespie of McGregor, TX, Wanda Gammage Lee and husband Johnny of Palestine, TX, and brother Fred Dickson of Palestine, TX. Grandchildren Cody Tate and Wes Gibson of Tyler, TX, JoBeth Tate Douglas and husband Jay of Grapeland, TX, Billy Doverspike and wife Jenna of Shepherd, TX, Dalton Duhon and wife Alexandra of Palestine, TX, Delaney Duhon of Tyler, TX, Danielle White of Livingston, TX and Brittany White of Port Arthur, TX. Great grandchildren Cooper and Kaydance Douglas, Presleigh and Westin Doverspike, Kiana Hamilton, Oliviah Moore, Skylar and Kadin Gregory and a host of nieces, nephews, and life long friends.


Miss Mona or Aunt Missy as she was known by was born on April 4, 1937 on the old Dow place in Houston County. She left this world for her heavenly home December 5, 2022. She attended Elkhart schools before transferring to Oakwood High School in Oakwood, TX graduating in 1955. She married the love of her life, Arvel Bennett on July 2, 1956.



In 1964, after moving to Grapeland, Mona began her health career at Community Memorial Hospital. She worked as a nurse’s aide before moving to the Central Supply Department. In 1975 she attended Angelina Junior College where she obtained an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science, Nursing graduating in 1977. She worked at Community Memorial Hospital until its closure then Memorial Hospital in Palestine followed by Trinity Valley Medical Center and Palestine Regional Medical Center. She retired from her beloved career as a Registered Nurse at the young age of 75. Miss Mona touched so many nurses’ lives in her highly accolated career teaching the art of nursing, caring and loving patients as they were known as her own family. She was the epitome of what a nurse should be and maintained that level of professionalism unequaled.


She was a member of First Baptist Church of Grapeland for 58 years accepting Christ as her Lord and Savior and being baptized on April 19, 1965. She was a member of the Ruth Sunday School class holding all the ladies close to her heart even when she could not attend services. She instilled in her girls her strong faith and love of family. She treasured her daughters, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and whole family. She so loved the bond her three girls shared.


The family would like to thank everyone who called, messaged, prayed, and loved our beautiful mother. Special Acknowledgment to Autumn Lambert, RN of Christus Mother Frances for her extraordinary care that she gave.

A Celebration of Life will be held January 7, 2023 at 11:00AM at First Baptist Church located at 504 W. Chestnut St. Grapeland, TX with Pastor David Bradley officiating. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center immediately following service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, Grapeland, TX.
